SLAM Represented on Jury for 2015 ACHA Project Legacy Award

Bill Karanian, AIA, ACHA of The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM) served as a jury member for the annual American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) 2015 Legacy Project Awards. The Legacy Project Award honors groundbreaking healthcare projects that redefined the understanding of a hospital or clinic’s potential and introduced innovations or supported breakthrough delivery of care concepts. ACHA Certificants can nominate one of these transformative projects completed and in operation on or before the year 2000 for recognition as a Legacy Project. This award recognizes healthcare architecture that has and continues to demonstrate superior planning and excellence in design performance over an extended period of time, and remains of enduring significance. The American College of Healthcare Architects provides board certification for architects throughout the United States and Canada who practice as healthcare specialists. Its mission is to distinguish healthcare architects through certification, experience and rigorous standards, with a vision to transform healthcare through better built environments.

Karanian is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer of SLAM. He has an extensive amount of experience in designing, planning, and managing healthcare facility projects and also serves as a member of the Board of Directors. As a leader in the design of patient-centered facilities, his projects have received national awards, and are recognized for their innovation in design, and operational and institutional transformation. “It was a significant honor for SLAM to be recognized by its peers with the inaugural ACHA Legacy Award in 2014”, says Karanian. “The Legacy Award epitomizes what ACHA is about – the advancement of healthcare design and sharing insight and knowledge. Serving as an invited jury member on this year’s panel has been a truly rewarding, meaningful privilege – one that I will remember fondly for many years.”

In 2014, SLAM won the inaugural Legacy Project Award for Griffin Hospital’s North Wing Addition and subsequent work over the past 25 years. Griffin Hospital located in Derby, CT, serves as the headquarters for Planetree, and was the flagship facility for Planetree Design. SLAM is one of six global firms that make up the Planetree Visionary Design Network.
