Danbury Hospital’s new expansion adds approximately 300,000 square feet of new construction to their existing campus – the largest expansion in the hospital’s history. The new North Tower Clinical Addition collects and reorganizes several major departments into a coherent whole and consists of the following:
  • A new Main Entry including a new double height Lobby space
  • Three new 35 Bed Med/Surg Floors (two shelled for future)
  • A new 30 Bed ICU/CCU
  • A 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art ED
  • Shell space to accommodate a modern surgical platform in the near future
what mattered to the client
  • to act as a catalyst to transform the performance, the experience and the perception of the overall institution, better aligning the facility with the hospital’s mission of “a higher level of care”
  • to develop a facility that will serve the needs of a new generation of staff by providing the latest
  • to embrace and support the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care
outcomes-based design RESULTS
  • While this program will provide for an array of modern departments, SLAM’s design makes strategic connections back to the existing facility to create a greater synergy between new and existing departments, and enhance overall connectivity, resulting in a project that will have an impact that extends beyond its immediate footprint.
  • The Main Entry is centered on a new 8,000 SF double height lobby that will not only provide necessary amenities, connections to various destinations, and act as a strong focal point, but will provide the first positive interior experience as one begins to engage the hospital services.
  • The new Bed Tower is composed of a continuous perimeter of private rooms, balancing access to daylight and views with a desire for compactness to mitigate walking distances for both family and staff. The rooms are organized around a uniquely shaped support core that will combine central and decentralized caregiver elements and allow for superior sightlines to aid in patient visualization and staff communication.
  • The entire new bed tower facility will be able to convert to all single bed, private rooms; a critical element to the delivery of healthcare in a safe, effective manner. The new, right-sized, private rooms will better address the needs of the patient, family and staff and help to support the full potential of Planetree.
