GLASTONBURY, CT, November 23, 2021 – SLAM (The S/L/A/M Collaborative) welcomes the addition of James “Jim” Hoagland, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Cole Peterson, RA, NCARB, and Victoria Fagan, Assoc. AIA, LEED Green Associate, to the firm’s education practice, supporting the Pre-K through higher education facilities, with an immediate focus in Connecticut and New England, and our growth in Rhode Island. Jim and Cole are based in the firm’s Glastonbury, Connecticut office and Victoria is based in Providence, Rhode Island.

Jim, as a senior design architect, brings more than 25 years of experience in design and master planning and implementation of public, independent, and higher education projects, including his present work for SLAM in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. His comprehensive approach to design aligns with SLAM’s project approach, that any project begins with a complex, yet accessible outcomes-based programming and planning model that considers the diverse perspectives and demographics of each stakeholder. Prior to SLAM, Jim has earned numerous regional and national awards, including recognition by the Association for Learning Environments for exemplary Planning Process. He was a former Design for Learning Knowledge Partner of the American Architectural Foundation’s Center for the Advancement of Architecture in support of its national Design for Learning Initiative.
Jim holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University and is a LEED Accredited Professional. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education, where he has presented at regional and national conferences. James is an active participant in the AIA Connecticut Architectural Experience Program (APX) Task Force and will provide mentorship for emerging professionals at SLAM. He is a former adjunct professor at the University of Hartford.
Cole, as a project architect, brings more than 13 years of experience serving as designer, lead interior designer, and project architect working in partnership with key project stakeholders in transforming education, municipal, hospitality, corporate, and residential architecture. At SLAM, he will infuse his diverse design perspective across multiple studio projects including education. His previous accomplishments include a broad spectrum of domestic and international design projects from the Ella T. Grasso Technical High School in Groton, CT and the Human Services Center in Bloomfield, CT to numerous 5-star properties such as the Al Messila Resort, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Doha, Qatar.
He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Boston Architectural College. Cole has an extensive proficiency in architectural design software that blends with his understanding and development of environments and their impact on users’ learning, creative, and contextual experiences. He is also skilled in logo design, fine art, photography, custom furniture design, and children’s book illustration.
Victoria, as an architectural designer, adds a next generation perspective in public education work to our team of designers on the Johnston Public Schools’ Stage II suite of projects including new pre-K and elementary schools as well as renovations to the middle and high schools. She will provide dedicated support from schematic design to rendering images through construction.
Victoria holds a Master of Architecture from Roger Williams University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Long Island University. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), currently working toward licensure as a registered architect in the state of Rhode Island.
