The Hopkins School engaged SLAM to envision a new academic building that will serve as a platform for educational innovation and support, helping to shape academic life for generations to come. Under the leadership of Head of School Matt Glendinning, the vision inspired the largest gift in the school’s 366-year history from distinguished alumnus John Malone. The resulting Gibbs Center will complete the academic quadrangle and provide state-of-the-art spaces for research, collaboration, and discovery, creating a lasting hub for teaching and learning at the heart of campus.
at-a-glance
Hopkins changed my life. As technology reshapes the world, I want Hopkins students to have the skills, curiosity, and confidence to lead. My hope is that the School continues to be a national leader in education for the next three centuries.
Hopkins envisioned a transformative academic destination that will prepare students for a rapidly evolving world while strengthening the campus for future generations. The goal is to create a center for innovation, exploration, and support that will reinforce the School’s longstanding leadership in education.
SLAM designed the Gibbs Center for Innovation as the culmination of decades of campus planning and partnership with Hopkins. Anchoring the academic quadrangle, the architecture will bring together advanced research and fabrication labs, robotics labs, a greenhouse, academic support spaces, and a digital visualization theater to foster hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and discovery.
The Gibbs Center will bring together collaborative learning spaces, a proposed digital visualization theater, and outdoor gathering areas to support interdisciplinary exploration.
The double-height academic commons will serve as a central hub for study, collaboration, and connection across disciplines.
The proposed digital visualization theater will provide immersive opportunities for experiential learning, research, and presentation.
An elevated terrace will extend learning and gathering beyond the classroom while offering views across campus to the iconic West Rock Ridge beyond.
Named in honor of pioneering scientist and Hopkins alumnus Josiah Willard Gibbs, Class of 1854, the Gibbs Center will serve as both a symbolic and physical heart of campus. The facility will equip students with the skills, curiosity, and confidence to lead in a technology-driven future while providing a lasting academic resource for generations to come.
The new courtyard will strengthen campus connections and provide a welcoming setting for gathering and reflection.
Outdoor spaces will encourage informal interaction, collaboration, and engagement throughout the school day.
The Gibbs Center will advance Hopkins School’s sustainability goals through high-performance systems, renewable energy strategies, and efficient building operations.
