Waters College of Health Professions

the story

Nestled within a wooded site outside of Savannah, the new Health Professions Academic Center at Georgia Southern University sets the framework for a new health professions district on the Armstrong Campus.  The new Center, designed to wrap and celebrate the wetlands, serves as a counter point to a campus which otherwise features traditional, rectilinear quadrangles with open lawns. The environmentally rich site presented the design team with numerous advantages impacting the final building design. The natural setting provides an organic, shaded oasis as a repose for students to embrace natural wetlands. The project is a new paradigm for healthcare leadership training, a confluence of aspiring young medical professionals and technological advancements within a dynamic multidisciplinary space.

INSIGHT

Enabling the University to provide exceptional education and training opportunities while addressing the healthcare needs of the region and taking advantage of an environmentally rich site.

SOLUTION

The site plan embraces the natural wetlands.

The form of the canopy evolved from a series of sun studies that sought to minimize heat gain on the southern façade while maximizing views to the wetlands.

The building plan supports a robust set of programs with the introduction of new simulation, nursing, lab, and classroom spaces.

At the heart of the building is the Memorial Health Active Learning Studio, a signature instructional space with two large expanses of glass and a sweeping ceiling. The area is outfitted for lectures and small-group settings for team-learning.
