Large‑scale custom graphics run throughout this new SLAM‑designed 155,000 SF, 950‑student middle school, forming an integrated experiential graphic system that supports wayfinding, learning, and identity. Inspired by the school’s shoreline location, distinct colors and themes of sea, land, sun, and sky orient users on each floor and grade level. Common spaces integrate all four colors, reinforcing inclusivity and representing the collective student body within shared environments.
at-a-glanceIn primary shared circulation spaces, the graphics bring together the school’s full visual language within a single environment. These areas represent the collective student body, reinforcing inclusivity while creating spaces that connect grades and support social interaction. Encouraging words integrated into the graphics further promote positive identity as part of the everyday student experience.
A floor‑based color system provides identity and orientation throughout the building. Inspired by Groton’s coastal setting, abstracted references to water, land, and sky define zones, clarify location, and create distinct learning environments on each level.
Together, the experiential graphic system supports clear navigation and meaningful engagement throughout the school day. Integrated with the architecture and informed by place, the graphics contribute to an environment that feels intentional, legible, and supportive of student experience.
