In 2019, the Town of Darien engaged SLAM to design a new PreK–5 elementary school that would serve as an inspiring, future‑ready learning environment for both K–5 students and the district-wide Early Learning Program. The district sought a building that could support evolving instructional methods, accommodate long-term enrollment growth, and offer opportunities for community use.
at-a-glanceDarien faced several key challenges in replacing the aging Ox Ridge facility. Rising enrollment required a building that could expand over time, while shifts in teaching and learning called for flexible, adaptable environments. The site added further complexity, with circulation constraints and community-access needs that had to be balanced with student safety. These factors shaped a design focused on long-term capacity, versatility, and a welcoming, connected campus.
The academic wing’s rectangular, donut-shaped layout works with the site’s natural grade, placing the single-story Early Learning Program at the higher elevation and the two-story K–5 wing opposite. A central two-level courtyard resolves the grade change and becomes the building’s organizing heart, featuring an amphitheater and outdoor learning spaces.
A Welcome Worth Waiting For
Nestled into the hillside on the original 10-acre site, the new 110,000 sf brick school welcomes 428 K-5 students and 150 Pre-K learners through a secure shared entry.
Arrival
The bright and daylit lobby immediately orients visitors, guiding them left to the single-story Early Learning Program with PreK classrooms and health services and right to the two-story K through 5 academic wing with clustered classrooms, Learning Commons, and special education spaces. Upon entering, visitors are greeted with an inspiring view of the central courtyard, which serves as the primary organizing element of the school and provides clear visual orientation from many points within the building.
Security
The front entrance features a welcoming check-in window for visitor screening and security, integrating ballistic- and forced-entry-resistant components while maintaining an inviting atmosphere for students and families.
Identity + Wayfinding
The school’s mascot and colors are woven into the architecture through custom graphics created by SLAM’s in-house designers. Along the daylit main stair, large-scale illustrations of the ox and surrounding landscape reinforce school identity and enliven daily circulation.
Indoor-Outdoor Learning
Floor-to-ceiling windows in the art classroom open directly to the tiered courtyard, reinforcing a seamless indoor–outdoor learning experience. The courtyard’s amphitheater seating and “bird’s nest” nook transform the site’s grade change into dynamic spaces for gathering, reading, and exploration.
Integrated into the site’s natural topography, the fully ADA-accessible courtyard serves as the school’s central organizing feature, offering outdoor curriculum space and multiple settings for hands-on learning.
Vibrant plantings and winding walkways create a welcoming outdoor environment, connecting students to nature throughout the day.
Learning Neighborhoods
Inside the K–5 wing, each grade level forms its own neighborhood of four classrooms centered around a dedicated Learning Commons that transforms the corridor into an active, flexible learning environment.
Color-coded class-level neighborhoods assist with wayfinding and user orientation. The corridors come alive with writable walls, flexible seating, and daylight-filled views that support brainstorming, collaboration, and quiet focus.
These neighborhoods foster creativity and peer connection by keeping small groups together for core instruction while opening into shared areas for projects, interventions, and social learning.
The multi-level Media Center sits just off the main lobby and bridges the academic and assembly wings. Upper tiers offer stacks and quiet reading areas, the middle tier supports classroom instruction, and the lower tier provides a discovery and maker environment. All levels are fully ADA accessible via an adjacent ramped corridor.
The new Ox Ridge Elementary School has become a vibrant community asset, giving Darien a modern, flexible learning environment that supports students from their earliest years through grade five. The building’s indoor–outdoor connections, adaptable spaces, and strong sense of identity reflect the town’s commitment to educational excellence for generations to come.
